The 2023 IIHF Womens World Championship has already gotten underway in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. It is another loaded field led by the powerhouse countries of Team USA and Canada. Canada and Team USA have dominated women’s hockey. However, over the last several years other nations like Finland, Czechia, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland have taken major strides. Entering this tournament, everyone figures to see a Team USA-Canada Gold Medal game.
Even before the tournament got underway, Canada was favoured to win their third straight gold medal. No surprise there considering the tournament is being played on Canadian soil. Not to mention Canada won the double gold in 2022. First, the Canadian women won Olympic gold in Beijing before heading to Denmark to win back-to-back gold Medals at the World Championships for the first time since they won eight straight from 1990 through 2004.
Canada has to weary of their rivals the United States. This team is hungry and out to reclaim the gold.

As stated at the top we know Canada is the favoured to win. Look what they did in the rivalry series against Team USA. Both teams are playing on a different level than the rest of the world’s nations. However, those nations mentioned earlier are catching up. There is no denying Canada and the United States will face off in the final. Now you can never say never in this sport, but there is a high probability of this happening.
The team to keep an eye on is Finland. The Finns are showing they are for real. Granted they beat up on France of Day 1 of competition, but Finland has given Canada and Team USA a run for their money. Finland has made the Gold Medal Game before as they upset Canada along the way. We all remember the 2019 Gold Medal Game.
Outside of Finland, Czechia has taken major strides in picking up the bronze medal last year. Granted they were in an easier group but still, you have to play the games. This year it will be tougher being a group with Team USA and Canada. However, there is no reason to think they can’t get back to the medal round.
Looking at the odds to win the MVP at this year’s Women’s Worlds; Sarah Fillier (+750) and Marie-Philip Poulin (+800) lead the way. However, Amanda Kessel (+850) and Taylor Heise (+850). Don’t sleep on Hilary Knight (+1000) as a sneaky good bet to win it. She steps up when it matters most.
Tournament actions continue today and run through April 16th. Enjoy the tournament and play safe.
