The 2023 Championships Wimbledon has reached the final weekend as the Ladies’ semifinals are in the books with Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur reaching the final on Saturday. On Friday, the Gentlemen take Centre Stage on Centre Court. The semifinals are set with Jannik Sinner taking on the defending champion Novak Djokovic. While in the other semifinal, Carlos Alcaraz will take on Daniil Medvedev.
Entering the tournament, Djokovic was the odds-on favourite to win the tournament. But right behind him were Carlos Alcaraz (+350), Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev were both at +2000. Three of the top four seeds have reached the semifinals. Everyone was hoping for Djokovic-Alcaraz Final on Sunday before the tournament began. Now these two are one match away from having s second straight meeting in a major.
Both matches have the potential to go to five sets. Alcaraz and Djokovic are both favoured to come through to set up a rematch of the Roland Garros semifinals. Novak Djokovic (-610) vs Jannik Sinner (+420)
The odds clearly favourite the defending champion here. And why not. Look he has won the title seven times. The pressure is on him and rises to the occasion. Djokovic knows the young guys want his “scalp” and defeat him, but he says “That ain’t happening.” He understands pressure is a privilege and in the pressure moments, Djokovic steps up.
Last year in the quarters Djokovic rallied from two sets down to beat Sinner (5-7, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2). You know Sinner has not forgotten that and has the game to beat Djokovic. It will be tough on this surface though. However, Sinner is playing some of his best tennis this fortnight. Novak dropped a set in each of the two previous matches so expect Sinner to take a set or two off of him.
Don’t forget Djokovic could have easily lost to Herbert Hurkacz in straight sets in the Round of 16. He was down in both tiebreaks and had to rally to win. Sinner has the game to beat Djokovic. Do people expect him to win? No, but anything can happen once these two take the court.
Carlos Alcaraz (-265) vs Daniil Medvedev (+210)
The second gentlemen’s semifinal features two men who have won the US Open in the past. So this will be a little closer of a matchup than the first semifinal. Each player will be looking to improve to 2-1 over the other. Alcaraz beat Medvedev this past year at Indian Wells. While Medvedev won their only meeting at a major last year at the Championships Wimbledon in the second round. That was before Alcaraz took off. This will be a different matchup.
Medvedev had to rally from two sets to one down to beat Christopher Eubanks in the quarterfinals. Once Medvedev won the fourth set tiebreak, he steamrolled into the semifinals winning the fifth set with ease. Meanwhile, Alcaraz handled his business winning in straight sets over Holger Rune 76 64 64 getting to the semis.
Both players can hit the ball with such force. The drop shot for Alcaraz will come into play with Medvedev standing so far behind the baseline. Medvedev made the adjustment against Eubanks, he will need to do the same against Alcaraz.
Expect this one to go at least four sets if not the distance.
That does it for your 2023 Championship Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Semifinals betting odds preview.
