The US Open is over three weeks away, but before we get there there is the US Open series. The first event of the US Open series wrapped up in Atlanta. Taylor Fritz took home the title. Now it is on to the Masters 500 with the 2023 Citi Open, which feels like a Masters 1000 event because a lot of top names are playing in Washington, D.C. As we have seen in years past this event can lead to success in the Masters 1000 events in Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, and the US Open. All eyes on the Nation’s capital this week.
The defending champion Nick Kyrgios will not play this year’s event. However, all eyes will be on the Americans entering the 2023 Citi Open including Taylor Fritz as he looks to have a nice run at the is event. As previously mentioned, Fritz opened the US Open Series with a win in Atlanta. He looks to carry that momentum into Washington, D.C.
Over the years the field on both the men’s and women’s site has gotten better. Outside of Fritz some of the names include Andy Murray, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe, Grigor Dimitrov, Hubert Hurkacz, and the darling from Wimbledon Tennis Channel analyst Christopher Eubanks just to name a few.
One the women’s side of the field the names includes Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Victoria, Azarenka, Carolina Garcia, and Elina Svitolina just to name a few.
There are some of the bigger names missing but they will return as they recover from a grueling clay court season and a short grass court season when the ATP heads north to Toronto, ON, Canada, while the women head to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The Citi Open runs from July 29th through August 6th at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington, D.C.
As previously mentioned it is one of the better events on both the ATP and WTA schedule. It is a loaded field minus several of the top players. But over the years this event has gotten better. Players recognize this a great tournament and the organizers make it special for the players to come back each year.
If you look at the seedings and compare the odds there is a reason why the players are ranked the way they are.
- Taylor Fritz – TBA
- Frances Tiafoe – TBA
- Felix Auger-Aliassime – TBA
- Hubert Hurkacz – TBA
- Grigor Dimitrov – TBA
But with the way players like Murray and Eubanks are playing do not be surprised to see them make a deep run.
On the women’s side of the field two of the top three favorites are Americans in Pegula and Gauff. Oh by the way, those two play doubles as well. Usually the favorites do not make the final on the women’s side. So will there be an unknown that makes the final.
- Jessica Pegula – TBA
- Carolina Garcia – TBA
- Coco Gauff – TBA
- Maria Sakkari – TBA
- Daria Kasatkina – TBA
The 2023 Citi Open qualifying is underway with the main draw getting underway this week. Odds are slowly coming out.
