It has been a busy off-season in the landscape of college football. There was major conference realignment news in the B1G 10 and the BIG 12. Those moves will not happen until the 2024-25 season. The 2023-24 season is the last year of the four-team playoff. And yes, we have not even gotten to the fact the expanded 12-team playoff is going to have to change as well. But that is another discussion for another time. With Week 0 right around the corner, what better time than now to look at the 2024 Odds to win the National Championship in College Football?
Of course, everything begins and ends with the SEC (South Eastern Conference). In the past 14 seasons, the conference has won 10 national titles, including the last four, two by Georgia, one by Alabama, and one by LSU. Alabama leads the way with six national titles over that span. Since college football flipped to the four-team playoff, the SEC has won six of eight national championships. Pure dominance.
The Georgia Bulldogs are the two-time defending national champions. The Dawgs are +300 to three-peat. USC in 2006 was the last team to try to three-peat but lost to the Vince Young-led Texas Longhorns in an instant classic in the national title game. The last team to three-peat was the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1934-1936. It is so hard to do so.
Even with so much parody in college football, the SEC reigns supreme outside of the years Clemson and Ohio St won. Expect the SEC to be the leader of the pack again this year. Now there are always surprises, but the SEC is the toughest conference title to win. It will be hard for Georgia to three-peat, but Kirby Smart will have his boys ready to play

Everyone expects Georgia or Alabama (+500) to be there again this year. The SEC will be tough, especially for Alabama. They have to deal with a second-year LSU Tigers team under Brian Kelly, Auburn, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. However, the Tide play better at home than on the road in these big games under Nick Saban. The quarterback play will be the key, along with their defense.
As for the Dawgs, there is a lot of turnover on both sides of the ball for the best team in college football. That Georgia defense will be tested. Again like with the Tide, the Dawgs have questions at quarterback with Stenson Bennett going to the pros. It is Carson Beck’s job to lose.
Staying in the SEC, LSU is +2000 to win the title, but speaking with Clay Travis, a college football expert from OutKick, believes LSU will win the SEC this year because it is the second year under Brian Kelly. The Tigers were right there and in the title game last year. Those Tigers had a big win over Alabama last year. It is LSU or Alabama coming out of the West.
Outside of the SEC, we look to the B10 with Michigan and Ohio St. Those teams are always there. But that is a round-robin of sorts in the B10 East. The Wolverines and Buckeyes play in the final game of the regular season each year, and the winner goes to Indy for the B10 Title game. Michigan lost in back-to-back semifinals, with Ohio St losing an instant classic to the Dawgs last year.
If USC or another team from the BIG 12 say Oklahoma or Texas run the table, it might be hard for the B10 to get two teams in again. Then again could there be a team that comes out of nowhere like TCU did last year to make the dance? Maybe. More on that in another post.
Back to the Pac-12. Caleb Williams is a great player, but USC’s problem was on the defensive side of the ball. The Pac-12 is theirs for the taking, but Utah, Oregon, UCLA, and Washington are also in the mix. But if USC can run the table, they get in.
What about the ACC? It comes to Clemson and Florida St. Clemson is +1600. Dabo Sweeney has been out of the playoff picture for a little bit now. He wants to get his team back in it. The conference is loaded as well with North Carolina, NC State, and Miami, if you believe they are back, similar to Texas. Not to mention Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.
And what about Notre Dame? Look, they do go undefeated to make it in. Right now, their odds to win the 2024 National Championship are at +3000.
This is going to be a fun college football season in the final year of the current conferences and playoff format.
