The US Open is over three weeks away, but before we get there, there is the US Open series.
The first two events of the US Open series are in the books. Taylor Fritz took home the title in Atlanta, with Dan Evans and Coco Gauff winning this past weekend at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. Now both the men and women head north of the border for the National Bank Open in Toronto (men) and Montreal (women) for a Masters and WTA 1000 event.
It is a loaded field in both Toronto and Montreal. All the big hitters have arrived in Canada. On the men’s side, the world number one and Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz is back in action, along with the hardcourt specialist Daniil Medvedev. In addition, Taylor Fritz, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas (who just won his first title), Jannik Sinner, and Andrey Rublev, along with a loaded field of guys, have a chance to win this title.
On the women’s side of the field, the names include Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Victoria, Azarenka, Carolina Garcia, and Elina Svitolina, to name a few. Again it is a loaded field in Montreal.

The National Bank Open runs from August 7th through August 13th in Montreal and Toronto.
As previously mentioned, it is one of the better events on both the ATP and WTA schedules. It is a loaded field in both Montreal and Toronto. We have seen some great matches and upsets take place at this event. The Canadian players love playing in front of their home fans and usually put on a good show. Not to mention it has been a stepping stone for the US Open.
If you look at the seedings and compare the odds, there is a reason why the players are ranked the way they are.
- Carlos Alcaraz – TBA
- Daniil Medvedev – TBA
- Casper Ruud – TBA
- Stefanos Tsitsipas – TBA
- Holger Rune – TBA
Don’t count out players like Rublev, Sinner, or Fritz to make a deep run here. Fritz is playing some of his best tennis right now. The big first-round matchup is Milos Raonic against Frances Tiafoe. Expect Felix Auger-Aliassime to have a good run.
On the women’s side of the field, two of the top three favorites are players who have won major titles, including Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina. Sometimes the favorites do not always go to the final. Each of these players has a tough draw.
- Iga Swiatek– TBA
- Ayrna Sabalenka – TBA
- Elena Rybakina – TBA
- Jessica Pegula
- Maria Sakkari – TBA
Don’t count players like Carolina Garcia, Petra Kvitova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and 2023 Wimbledon Champion Marketa Vondrousova.
The 2023 National Bank qualifying is over and first-round action gets underway Monday. Odds are slowly coming out.
